One good thing about the auto-dimming rear-view mirrors is that you do not have to worry about being blinded. However, seeing them at work is a lot like looking at magic. However, when breaking down the process and how it is so effective, it will make a lot of sense.

In order to know how auto-dimming rear-view mirrors work, you have to look at the different components inside the mirror. There are two sensors which could be cameras. There is the microprocessor. There are two layers of glass with one of them being reflective. There is also the electrochromic gel.

When a bright light is shined on the mirror, the sensors pick up the information and transfer it over to the processor. A charge is then sent to the gel which is housed in the two layers of glass. This sets off an oxidation effect that dims the gel.
